After the relative success of my last outing, both in terms of the golf and my sciatic back, I tried again today. It wasn't quite as successful, with a number of poor golf shots and a lot more discomfort from my sciatica. I took the Game Golf device, which amazingly still performed after not using it for ten months. I feared a battery failure as this can happen when you leave it uncharged for a long time.
I had a good start. My drive on the 1st appeared to go towards the ditch on the right but the ball was in fact about a couple of yards clear when I got to it. A couple of reasonable hybrids followed by a 6-iron got me on the green, and a longish putt just crept in for a par 5. Amazing! I found a tree on the left with my drive on the 2nd but the ball fell clear and a low 6-iron got me back on the fairway. I then managed to put my hybrid shot in the right bunker. I'm well out of practice for bunker play and it took me two to get out. With two putts this resulted in a triple bogie 7.

I tried a 6-iron off the 3rd tee but didn't connect well, making only 66 yards. I then completely fluffed the next 6-iron leaving me a pitch over the big bunker. My pitching wedge shot seemed to be dropping into the bunker but it in fact cleared it and rolled along the green to give me a gettable putt. But I needed two for a double bogie 5. I connected well with my drive on the 4th making 164 yards. I then played a poor hybrid leaving me with a safety 8-iron into the gap between the trees and the lake. I then put the ball on the green with a 6-iron and two-putted for 6, a very acceptable outcome on this tricky hole especially after a poor approach.
A bit of luck saw my drive on the par-3 5th make the green. It's a big undulating green and I misread the slope leaving my first putt well short. I needed two more to finish with a bogie 4, which still wasn't that bad. I found the rough on the right with my shortish drive off the 6th tee. I then only managed to push the ball a few yards with a hybrid and changed to a 6-iron that got me out clean. I put the ball on the green with my 8-iron but needed two putts for a double bogie 6.
Things really started to go wrong on the 7th. A badly sliced drive put me in the trees but I played a good 6-iron out to the left of the fairway. A couple of hybrids got me close to the green, and also uncomfortably close to a bunker. But my pitch was then thinned and crossed the green to the far side rough. I then overplayed the return needing two putts to finish with an 8. The 8th was remarkably similar; a drive, two hybrids and a 6-iron close to the green. I then hit the ground before the ball with my gap wedge and needed another chip and two putts for 8.
I had a poor drive on the 9th the ball finishing up in rough to the left. A good 6-iron out followed by two hybrids left me an 8-iron to the green, but I thinned it and the ball crossed the green requiring another chip back. Two putts followed for an 8 once again on this par-5.
I came in with 58 and 19 putts. My current handicap is 31 following the change to the handicapping system that now grants a number greater than 28 for men, giving me 12 points today.
