Mission: Impossible - Fallout

The latest Mission Impossible, which is number 6 in the series, certainly doesn't disappoint. In fact it could be the best to date. Tom Cruise, as Ethan Hunt, teams up with Luther and Benji to save the world from the Apostles, a group reformed from the remnants of the Syndicate following Hunt's capture of Solomon Lane. Isla Faust is also here, of course, but on this occasion she's not actually with the team. Her mission is somewhat different, and also so secret as to be kept from Ethan.
The mission is also complicated by CIA chief Erika Stone's insistance that one of her operatives, August Walker, joins the IMF team. This is ostensibly because in the opening sequence of the film we see Ethan missing the opportunity of recovering three plutonium-filled capsules because he put the life of Luther above that of the mission. Walker, we are assured, would not have been so sentimental.
The action moves to Paris, where Ethan and Walker sky-dive onto the roof of the Grand Palais, an event not without incident. They are there to find the leader of the Apostles, John Lark, who is to meet The White Widow, a lady known for her ability to set up exchanges between, shall we say, organisations that do not conduct their business in the open. The idea is to identify John Lark and impersonate him, employing the mask-making equipment for which the IMF are now famous. Unfortunately all does not go to plan, but the resulting fight in the toilets will go down in cinema history. Ethan and Walker take on the man they assume to be Lark, but boy can he fight. Bruce Lee eat your heart out! The result is that Plan A is consigned to the dustbin and Ethan decides to wing it.
After this things get very complicated, leading to an amazing action sequence through the streets of Paris, after which we're not too sure who's on whose side, a state of affairs that persists for some time. The action then moves to London, where an exchange organised by The White Widow is to take place. But London holds some more surprises, and once again things don't quite go according to plan, despite a superb piece of subterfuge to unmask the real John Lark. This takes us into the final act of the drama, in Kashmir.
If the action and the intrigue up to this point have kept you on the edge of your seat, this final sequence is likely to leave you amazed. We watch the stunts, sometimes without considering how on earth they were engineered. I won't say any more than to tell you that helicopters are involved, against a backdrop of spectacular Himalayan scenery. Ethan finds himself in a race against time to prevent Armageddon in Kashmir, where it so happens that he finds the mission has become even more personal than he could have ever imagined. Solomon Lane has devised a plot that will not only achieve the Apostles' world-changing ambitions, but also destroy everything that Ethan has ever cared-for. For Lane it's pay-back time.
Do not miss this film, and don't wait for the DVD. This is definitely a cineramic experience.
